Just a note today....the cold has gotten a bit worse so am taking it easy....lots of congestion, runny nose, watery eyes, you know, the whole nine yards....I haven't had a cold in about 10 months so hopefully it won't get too bad...drinking lots of hot tea and water.....
Yesterday, we planted our seed potatoes and onions.....getting started on the garden..we found the softest place in the garden area for them..two years ago, we experimented with compost which didn't do very well, so we dumped the smelly compost in one end of the garden and covered it up...this area has the nicest softest ground now so I guess our compost experiment wasn't a complete disaster!
We've been working now for 3 years to get all the rocks out of the garden area...as you know, this part of California is rock city...tons of them, both large boulders and small pebbles......everywhere you look, you find rocks...
These are some we dug out last year.....this is a small portion of what we found.....most of them are granite....
This year, I think we have succeeded in getting most of them out....and will again keep amending the soil..we are moving the planting around too.....I noticed that our ground squirrels have been digging holes in the garden ground and burying duck food....they sneak over to the ducks food dish and fill their cheeks, then run to the garden area and bury it......so I guess in their own way they are helping us amend the soil too whether they realize it or not!

And to think we pay a fortune for a few rocks here in Florida! I miss rocks. But it does make the gardening a little easier. I found that doing the compost on the ground was much more successful than in the composter that I bought. We my sister's goats and chickens, tons of leaves, and kitchen scraps, we had a whole lot of "gold" this year to use. In fact, I left one batch and planted some things right in the fenced circle of turned compost. Nice big garden area!!!!
ReplyDeleteHope you feel better soon, Dani! Nothing worse than a cold. You feel rotten, but aren't sick enough for much sympathy!
Sorry you're under the weather, Dani- hope you feel better soon. We live in a rocky area too... they are everywhere. That sure is a big one Alan is standing on... hope you don't try and move that one! *hehe*
ReplyDeleteI think Big Bear is ALL rock. Digging to try to plant trees has been a challenge, and all our gardening will be done in raised beds.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry you're not feeling well. Most people in the US are deficient in vitamin D, so taking a D3 supplement (and in large doses when you begin to feel ill) can help fight it. I use a multitude of herbals to fight it and all other ills. I still get sick on occasion, but it doesn't seem to last as long as it does for other folks.
Hope you are feeling better soon.
I seriously love your site.. Pleasant colors & theme. Did
ReplyDeleteyou build this site yourself? Please reply back as I'm trying to create my very own website and want to know where you got this from or exactly what the theme is named. Many thanks!
