Less We Forget

Tomorrow being the 9th anniversary of the Sept. 11 tragedy....there is a internet movement to have everyone to hang out their American flags tomorrow....its good to hang them out daily but especially tomorrow....so I hope you will....this tragedy not only effected the people in New York but the entire nation....something perhaps the Iman doesn't consider....its still burned into my memory, especially when the Palestinian neighbor boy came over to invite us to the party his family was having to celebrate.
I am thankful the pastor won't be burning the Koran...We should follow the scripture and "Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good." Romans 12:21

Alert!

Senate bill S510 is a really bad bill....its coming up for vote this month and hopefully Senate will vote it down...basically what it means is that you and I won't be able to grow our own vegetables anymore... if we do, it means that Homeland security could come in and arrest you for giving your neighbors some of zucchini and tomatoes....sick..although realistically, I don't see how they will be able to monitor every neighborhood. Another example of bad big government..please vote this September....we need people who will follow our Constitution and give us back our blood bought freedoms....
we have had trouble here in California with natural food stores being raided by armed police, if this bill passes...could farmers markets be far behind?

I just wonder if all the fuss over the Koran burning and the mosque building is a smokescreen (no pun intended) to keep the attention off this bill?

All Hearts Come Home candle mat

Thought I'd show you the other of the two recent candle mats...I really like these last two.....I showed you the other one a post or two ago... here.

This square one measures about 8 inches...nice for the large pillar candles...very festive for Christmas..they are both for sale at Yardseller


I am also going to start working soon for a special friend who ordered some  redwork flour sack towels.....I do some custom work if there is something special you would like....as long as its for hand embroidery....pillowcases, towels, bread cloths, etc.

Today is cool and overcast..almost chilly...fall weather...I have fig jam cooking on the stove...and planning on an apple pie....if I can get off the computer that is!

I won! and Apple Bundt Cake

I was cruising around Facebook this morning and found out the wonderful ladies from Gooseberrypatch, selected a recipe I submitted to be in one of their cookbooks!....so I will be getting whatever cookbook they publish it in..how fun is that? This is the recipe that won....I think I've posted it before..

Salmon Party Log 

15-oz. can salmon, dark skin and bones removed
8-oz. pkg. cream cheese, softened
1 T. lemon juice
2 t. grated onion
1 t. horseradish
1/4 t. salt
1/2 c. chopped pecans
1/4 t. liquid smoke
3 T. chopped parsley


Mix the first 6 ingredients together; mix together well. Form mixture into a log. Mix chopped pecans, liquid smoke and parsley together well..cover the log with this mixture, rolling carefully. Let this sit a few hours in the fridge. Serve with your favorite crackers. Makes 12 servings.

yesterday, I cooked up a batch of applesauce from the apples we got at Oak Glen...have more to do today plus as its cooler, make a apple cake.....the Just a Pinch Recipe Club has this one that looks really good..I have everything to make it except the Tang.....need to go to the store today anyway so will pick some up...
Blue Ribbon Apple Bundt Cake.....the recipe was submitting by a member...

STREUSEL
3/4 c	sugar
3 tsp	orange flavored instant drink mix (like tang)
2 tsp	cinnamon
CAKE
3 c	all purpose flour
2 c	sugar
3 tsp	baking powder
3 tsp	orange flavored instant drink mix
1/2 tsp	salt
1 c	vegetable oil
1/2 c	water
2 tsp	vanilla extract
4 lg	eggs
4 c	apples, peeled and thinly sliced
SPICE GLAZE
2 c	powdered sugar
1 Tbsp	butter, softened

Heat oven to 350 F. Grease and flour a 12-cup Bundt pan

Combine streusel ingredients in a small bowl; set aside.

In a large bowl, combine all cake ingredients except apples. Pour 1/3 of batter (about 1 2/3 C) into Bundt pan. Layer 2 cups of apples over batter; sprinkle with half the streusel. Repeat layers with another 1/3 of batter, remaining apples and remaining streusel. End with remaining 1/3 of cake batter.

Bake for 65-75 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean when tested. Cool in pan for 3 minutes, then invert onto a serving plate to cool completely.

When cake is cool, prepare glaze. In a small bowl, combine powdered sugar, butter and spice. Add milk one tbsp at a time until smooth and of drizzling consistency. Drizzle glaze over cooled cake.

Oak Glen

Yesterday we both decided to go up to Oak Glen...its a little town nestled up in the foot hills of the San Bernardo mountains....mostly apple orchards...and this time of year is their Apple Days..yesterday was the first day of the season..I have posted before about Julian..which is in San Diego county...it also is a big apple town...and thousands of people flock there every fall....Oak Glen is not as well known, just if not more fun, and not crowded...we had a wonderful time...here are a few photos we took. The above  is a picnic area...

Hay rides every day...the Belgian horses were wonderful...so huge and yet so gentle.

Raspberries are in season right now and there are several you-pick places to choose from..we picked a peck of red raspberries..yum!

Lots of apples too....Gravinstein, Gala, and Crabapples are in season right now.....we bought a box of Graveinsteins.....plan on canning some and making applesauce...

Many cute gift shops too.....this one featured many Civil War items....they have Civil War reenactments in the area..all the workers dress in 1860 clothing which makes it fun.

We went to one bakery..just look at the goodies....this one featured 5 lb. "Mile High" pies....we ordered a sugar free one to take home....and got each of our sons a special treat..Matt got a apple burrito and Don a apple empanda...it looked like a giant turnover....below is some of the "mile high" pies....

It was nice to see some primitive dolls and such too...not too many places here feature primitive...

We plan to go back again when the weather is a little cooler...they have a good Christmas festival also....its only a 40 mile drive from us which isn't bad at all..
we came home, with apple cider, a box of Gravinsteins, a peck of red raspberries, a bag of Galas, 3 pints of pumpkin, and apple butter..+ we found a very useful apple corer that has a suction to hold it to the counter..the one we had before (that was lost in the fire) used a clamp....
we didn't see everything and there are orchards we didn't visit...someone ( a local) recommended  a wonderful restaurant that has been in business for 70 years so that will be on the agenda for next time....

Tim Hawkins....Old Rock Star Songs

My dear friend, Sandi who lives in North Carolina..posted this Tim Hawkins video on Facebook and I just had to share it with my blog readers... sorry,she doesn't have a blog, and is one of my dearest gold friends..you remember the Brownie song.."Make new friends but keep the old..one is silver, the other gold.."? We met and became friends in high school.....

I don't feel like I'm getting older, but know I am..we started everything late in our live together..our boys didn't come until I was almost 40....its been a fun ride
I really enjoyed this video..hope you do too..

Candle Mats, a 50s House and Cats

Here is the unfinished new candle mat..I think I like this pattern the best..hopefully I'll get it finished today....working on a second one...its square and its a new pattern too....
I also am changing my blog background to a more fall one....
yesterday we re keyed a house in Santa Ana...nice town with many 1950s houses..this house had been tastefully remodeled, still keeping the feel of the 1950s or at least I thought so.....the yard was wonderful with many tropical palm trees and plants...

The double front doors are really lovely with etched glass inserts...

They had retiled the kitchen and left the vintage cabinets.....

It wasn't entirely redone..probably lost the house before completion...but did finish the master bath..I liked the bathroom sink..what is that type of sink called? a vessel? I liked it but Alan didn't...he's a traditional guy...

It is really nice a nice house for the right family..3 bedroom, two bath...lots of storage which our house lacks......

Wednesday

I don't know if you got see the Restoring Honor rally last Saturday....we watched the entire thing on Glenn Beck's Facebook page.....so glad they were able to show it..but before the rally started, what should happen but a large flock of Canadian geese flew overhead in a perfect V....amazing that they should come right at the same time the rally was starting...coincidence?

I've been busy, doing more stitching....have two new, really new candle mats in the works..I think they are the best yet and hope someone will like them too....I'll give you a preview tomorrow when they are further along...it will be time soon to do a giveaway...you know, I don't do them very often so this will be a good one...!

Alan and I went to Santa Ana today to rekey a foreclosed house...long drive for us, so I'm a little pooped...so is he..of course, he took a nap when he got home...not me....I just am not a nap person....our business looks like its really going to pick up here ...the realty office we work with in San Diego county as told us they've gotten in with both Freddy Mae and Fannie Mack + other government agency for all San Diego county..and will have hundreds of properties to re key really soon....we're hoping to bring in both our sons to help as its more than one person can do....all our hard work is paying off.....

We've also been looking at Hoosier cabinets on Craiglist...we really need more storage in the kitchen...and one of these would fit the bill plus they are just plain wonderful....part of the reason I lost so much in the garage fire is that I had alot of my kitchen appliances in a cabinet out there...like the blender, food processor, ice cream maker, etc. no room in the kitchen for them....but we do have wall space...right now the piano is there but that can be moved into the living room.....hopefully, we will see the right one at the right price soon...can hardly wait....this one is in the running..
